Each month we like to highlight a substitute teacher who has a unique skill, hobby, or story. This month we are highlighting substitute teacher Ann Alexander.

I learned woodworking when I was teaching at Lawrence HS. The woodshop teacher, Jay Hundley, taught me how to use all the shop equipment and let me use the shop in my free time. I loved cutting, joining and finishing the wood. After I retired, spending the day with Jay and his students was a joy.

My original work was all cut and finished. For the last 2 years I have been using live edges. Jay retired in 2019 so I don’t have access to the shop now, but I have prepared wood to use for 30 projects that I work on at my house.

My family includes my partner Linda, my daughter Sarah (She is an engineer and works all around the world and I get to travel to visit), her husband and two children. Also, my son Travis who works in Information Technology at KU and two grandchildren here in Lawrence.

I have been substitute teaching since retiring in 2013. I miss being with kids. My favorite sub jobs are long term, where I get to know teachers and kids.
