Sub of the Month

We chose Mary as our Sub of the Month because she is dedicated to substitute teaching and the students. She consistently receives positive feedback from teachers and is a very hard-working substitute teacher. Thanks for everything Mary!

What do you like most about being a substitute teacher?

What I like most about substitute teaching is the variety. I enjoy doing something different every day.

Why did you become a Substitute Teacher? What is your background or other jobs you have had?

I retired after being a fulltime educator for 32 years. I have been in the classroom, a school guidance counselor and an athletic director. I did some of those “when I retire” things, then boredom set in rather quickly. I wanted to give back as I know what it is like trying to find a substitute on the morning of a teacher absence.

What is your favorite grade level/subject to teach?

Teachers are not supposed to have favorites, but I really enjoy working in the SPED classrooms, theater/drama and automotive technology. I learn so much from these students every time I work in their classes.

What do you feel the students like most about you when you fill in as the teacher?

I think students appreciate that they will be treated fairly and respectfully, and the learning environment will be as positive as possible. Also, that the regular routines of the classroom will be followed.

What do you do in your free time when you are not working?

In my free time I love to read, volunteer with “Backpack Buddies” and the free community meal with my church. I watch or attend sporting events especially the University of Oklahoma teams.

Tell us about your family.

I have an adult son (semi driver for Walmart) who lives in Kansas City, Kansas. My extended family lives in Oklahoma.

Tell us something unique about yourself.

You can’t tell by looking (never judge a book by its cover) but, I was raised in a traditional Cherokee Indian home in Oklahoma. I have my Cherokee Tribal membership and blood quantum card from the US Dept. of Interior.
