Sub of the Month

Kitsy is our Substitute of the Month because of all the hard work she does for her students and MHED. She takes a lot of jobs and gets consistent positive feedback. We appreciate all that she does for the schools, students, and MHED.

How long have you been a substitute teacher?

I have been a substitute teacher for a year and a half.

What do you like most about being a substitute teacher?

Having taught for over 34 years, I was ready to retire, but not ready to stop interacting with children. I enjoy teaching them, connecting with them, encouraging them and supporting them in all aspects of their lives. Substitute teaching gives me the luxury of doing all those things with the freedom to do other things I didn’t have time for when I was a full time educator. I also have the opportunity to see former students from Pinckney Elementary (the school I called my second home for the last 13 years of my career) either at Pinckney or other elementary schools, middle schools, and even high schools in Lawrence. I enjoy seeing teachers I knew during my teaching years and making friends with new ones.

What did you do before becoming a substitute?

I taught either first or second grades during my first five years of my career with the rest being devoted to Title 1 Math. I was fortunate to be able to take time off between classroom teaching and Title 1 Math to stay home with our young children.

What have been some of your biggest accomplishments in life?

I am blessed to have three grown children with families of their own. They are all successful in their chosen professions and are wonderful parents. I would like to think that, by the grace of God and with His guidance, I have been a part of helping them throughout their lives. I also treasure the lasting relationships I’ve made with several of my students including those from my 1969-70 class of first graders!

What have been some of your biggest challenges in life?

I believe my biggest challenge throughout my career has been keeping a proper balance between teaching and family life. Throw in church activities and other responsibilities, for me it was sometimes a bit crazy! However, we made it work and came through it all just fine.

What do you like to do for fun?

I love spending time with my family! We enjoy playing games and just hanging out. I love being outside whether it’s going for walks, working in the yard, or playing with the kids. I like to exercise, spend time with friends, create personalized greeting cards, and travel.

Tell us about your family.

Our children are Tacy, Jody, and Jay. Tacy and Jody are educators and Jay is a Physician Assistant. They have given us two wonderful sons-in-law, one beautiful daughter-in-law and 6 fabulous grandchildren! (I’m a little biased) My husband, Paul, is a minister and we will celebrate 50 years of marriage this summer with our family in Colorado!

Tell us something interesting about you.

I am the youngest of 5 children and we still keep in touch with each other throughout the week. Something some people find interesting about me is that my oldest brother is Lyle Waggoner of the Carol Burnett Show, a popular variety show in the ’60s and ’70s.
