Summer break is finally here, and teachers and students are excited to experience the warm weather. But for substitute teachers, this time of year often means a sharp decrease in income. Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be that way! With a little creativity and some hustle, substitutes can make some extra cash during the months off of school. In our previous blog post, 5 Ways Subs Can Make Extra Income Over the Summer, we gave you some ideas on how you could earn money over the summer. Let’s explore additional unique ways substitutes can boost savings, pay off debt or just have some fun while staying busy with a temporary summer gig!

DO WHAT YOU DO BEST: TEACHER

Just because school’s out for the summer doesn’t mean students stop needing academic support. In fact, many students take summer classes or continue to work on schoolwork to get ahead. As a substitute teacher, you’re already familiar with the curriculum and can offer valuable services to families in your area. Here are a few ways to continue teaching over the summer:

  • Tutoring: Help students reach their full potential by tutoring them in subjects they need extra assistance in. Advertise your tutoring services on social media or reach out to local tutoring centers to see if they’re in need of summer help.
  • Sell your lesson plans: Teachers Pay Teachers is a great place to find classroom resources, insights and knowledge from others in the profession. Simply upload your unique lesson plans and any necessary materials, sit back and watch the downloads (and money) roll in. Visit teacherspayteachers.com to learn more.

UBER OR LYFT DRIVER

Looking for a flexible side gig that allows you to make your own schedule? Get your engine revving by driving for Uber and Lyft. While there’s no simple answer to know what you will make, Salary.com reports the average hourly rate is between $15 and $22. Study up on what it takes to work for these companies so you can zoom past any roadblocks and earn some serious cash.

FREELANCER

Freelancing is a great way for substitute teachers to utilize their skills outside of the classroom. Whether you’re a writer, graphic designer or photographer, there are plenty of websites that allow you to find work on a project-by-project basis. Upwork, Fiverr and Freelancer are just a few examples. Not sure what you could offer as a freelancer? Consider creating teaching resources, designing posters or handouts or even writing educational blog posts for companies that offer thought leadership or educational content in their blogs.

EVENT STAFFER

Tired of the same old gigs? Translate your dedication and commitment to excellence into event staffing this summer. Summer is peak season for weddings, festivals and other celebratory events. Many companies hire temporary staff to help with everything from catering to event planning. Reach out to local event planning companies or wedding venues to see if they’re in need of extra help.

NANNY

As a substitute teacher, you’re already well-equipped to handle the task of caring for children. Nanny Nexis is a great local Kansas City resource for those looking for a nannying gig this summer. You can also consider advertising your babysitting services on social media or through websites like Care. With many families in need of assistance during the summer months, there are plenty of opportunities to earn some extra income while doing what you do best – working with kids.

SPORTS COACH

With your teaching skills, you can help aspiring athletes develop their talents. It’s a win-win situation. Not only will you get to enjoy the outdoors and work with young athletes, but you can do it all while still maintaining your role as a substitute teacher. Coaching sports gives you the opportunity to share your passion for sports with others while also making a positive impact on the lives of young people.

PET SITTER

If you’re an animal lover, why not make some extra cash by pet-sitting over the summer? Websites like Rover and Wag! allow you to create a profile and find clients in your area. You could also reach out to local pet stores or grooming salons to see if they know of any families in need of pet-sitters. Additionally, dog walking is not only a great way to earn extra income over the summer, you will get some good exercise.

EXPERIENCE THE BENEFITS OF A TEMP JOB

If the typical “summer job” isn’t your thing, then temporary or contract work could be right up your alley. This is a great way to work a 9-5 job without committing for more than the summer. It may be a challenge to find something that fits your needs, but temp jobs can be a wonderful way to earn extra cash this summer. Our sister company Morgan Hunter is a great resource for those looking for temp jobs. Visit morganhunter.com to check out our temporary openings or submit your resume for consideration. If your qualifications match what they are looking for, they will contact you with some opportunities for the summer. Happy hunting!
