Sub of the Month

After her kids started first grade, Jenna Merriman decided it was time to get back to substitute teaching.

“I really enjoy the kids and the variety of classes I get to teach,” Jenna said. “I love the hugs from the kids who remember me.”

Prior to her substitute teaching career, Jenna earned a Bachelor’s of Music Education degree from Baker University and taught vocal and instrumental music at Williamsburg Elementary. After having children, Jenna decided to stay home with them until they started first grade.

“After my kids started school, I decided to get back into education via substituting. It allows me the flexibility I need to still be able to make it to school parties and go on field trips,” she said.

In addition to substitute teaching, Jenna also gives piano lessons. It’s no wonder that her favorite class to teach is music.

“I feel like the kids like that I am kind and approachable, ready to help them out with any problems. It’s always a great day when at the end of it kids give you hugs on their way out the door like they do with their regular classroom teacher.”

Along with her husband Art, Jenna is the mother of twins Zoe and Xander.

“Zoe is in gymnastics and loves unicorns. Xander loves Legos and being creative with building different creations. We also have a boxer named Magnus.”

When she isn’t working, Jenna is taking her daughter to gymnastics and teaching piano lessons.

“I enjoy volunteering in my kids’ school and serving on the PTO board. I am also an active member of Multiples of Kansas City.”

Congratulations to Jenna! We are excited to choose her as our December Sub of the Month. Jenna has worked for MHED since September of 2016. She works in the De Soto school district. Whenever we call Jenna to work, especially for those last-minute assignments she always picks up the phone and is always agreeable to work just about any assignment we need her in. Jenna always gets great feedback from teachers and we appreciate her flexibility.
